Revelation
“Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and
women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark (Ezekiel 9:6).” Selective
slaughter is not an uncommon occurrence in the Bible, the same holy scripture
from which I once drew comfort. As a child, Catholicism had an important
presence in my life, but realizing the weight behind the words forced me to
question the foundations of my faith.
Much of my childhood was devoted to church, Sunday
school, and reading my Precious Moments Bible, particularly the story of Noah’s
Ark. I felt an overwhelming sense of awe toward God’s compassion to save two of
every animal from the flood. Faith continued to be a driving force in my life
until my early teens when I began to investigate the Bible in depth.
The children’s version of Noah’s Ark left out some
gruesome details. I realized for the first time that God created this massive
flood to wash away all of his human creation and start again. Disgusted with my revelation,
I began to notice similar disturbing Bible stories – Abraham and Isaac,
Jephthah’s Daughter, and Elisha and the Bears. Instead of sacred precepts, I
found that the Bible contained far more tales of genocide and misogyny. Based
upon my discoveries, I took interest in juxtaposing sinister Bible verses with the
childhood innocence of dollhouse miniatures.

Extinguished
I was brought up in a casual
Catholic household. Although not actively involved in the church, we attended
mass every Sunday as a family, and I prayed every night before bed. I knew
there was a God; there just had to be. It was the only way I ever knew.
In high school, I began noticing
things about the church and scriptures that I no longer found comfort in;
rather, they disturbed me. I gradually became distant from my faith, which
leads me to where I am today. My beliefs (or lack thereof) cannot be simply
classified with a specific label, but I suppose I would fall between
agnosticism and atheism.
I built shadowboxes to contrast my
beliefs as a child and my beliefs as an adult. Through innocent eyes, I only
focused on the inspiring and loving messages from God, whereas today I have an
entirely different view on the subject matter. My faith has been extinguished.

On A Roll
ON A ROLL
Life is about chances.
It’s all a roll of the
dice.
You never know what your
next move is going to be.
You win some.
You lose some.
But you still try to make
it
to the end.
You may notice there are
no game pieces.
In this game, YOU are the
game piece.
Pick up the die;
you’re On A Roll.

Photo Date #4
The subject matter for my past few photo dates has reflected my breakup. Since it is a situation that affects me a on a daily basis, it has been difficult to think of other sources of inspiration. I wanted to attempt something different for this week, but I still had the urge to document my breakup. This indecision always creates an internal battle as I try to figure out what I really want to do. Struggling with my options leads me to ask myself, "Is this what I truly want to do, or am I trying to live up to everyone else's expectations?"
